5 Questions You Need Answered Before Hiring a House Painter

Tips & How To's

How difficult can it be? All you need to do is put some paint on a roller and roll it onto your walls. Painting the inside of a house is generally regarded as an easy DIY project. That is, until you actually start to paint.

From the sheer amount of time it takes, to the cleanup efforts and the literal pain in the neck you get from painting the ceiling, doing your own interior painting is anything but easy. And when you’re done, you have paint drops on your floors, ceiling paint on your walls, and wall paint on your ceilings.

If you’ve ever hired a good house painter, you’ll know the pleasure of having your house quickly beautified, usually in a day or two, without ever having to get paint out of your hair.

But you need to make sure you hire the right house painters or you might end up having even more headaches than doing the job yourself. Among other things, here are just a few questions to ask any professional painters that you’re considering for the job.

1. Are you insured?

It’s your home, and you and your family need to be protected. If the answer to this question is ‘no’, move on to the next contractor. If the answer is ‘yes’, ask for proof.

2. Do you have references?

Again, if ‘no’, move on. And don’t be afraid to check out the references.

3. What Paint Do You Use?

Primarily, you’re looking for a major brand name here, like Benjamin Moore or Sikkens. If you’ve never heard of the paint manufacturer, think twice before letting anyone put it on your walls.

4. Who will be working in my home?

Some house painters like to take on many jobs at once to make more money. They hire sub-contractors to actually do the work while they go out and find more jobs. It’s a situation you want to avoid. Instead choose a painter who actually does the work or who has full-time employees do the work.

5. What’s your warranty?

You can face two main issues after a professional painter finishes painting your home. First, in the short-term, they may have done a poor job or there’s some other issue that requires immediate attention. Second, there could be an issue with the paint used, which may not show up for some time. Ask about and research warranties to make sure you’re properly covered in both cases.
