Our Favourite Benjamin Moore Whites For 2022…In No Particular Order….

Chantilly Lace OC-65

Chantilly Lace OC-65

Let’s start with Benjamin Moore’s known truest white, OC-65 Chantilly Lace.  This has become a fast growing popular colour choice for a pure, bright white.  This shade of white can work for trims, doors, ceilings and on occasion the walls as well.  The majority of its use is for millwork because it’s a ‘pure’ white.  This colour is unfiltered by coloured tint, which makes for an untainted white that can frame off many colours.  On the other hand, it sometimes reflects as too stark of a contrast against subtler colours.  It may appear too sterile for cabinetry, however it works well on the walls for a modern and streamlined style.

Cloud White CC-40

Cloud White CC-40

What can you say about Cloud White? It has been a tried and true colour, steadily for trim, because it’s a warm and soft white on the eyes.  It’s cloudy—yes, that’s fitting—, so it doesn’t appear as a sharp contrast with wall colours.  Cloud white couples well with subtle and soft colours such as the Historical colours, like HC-172 Revere Pewter.  While Revere Pewter can also be used with a sharp white, like Chantilly Lace, there is a much softer affect when used with Cloud White.  While this colour is popularly used for trim, it can also be applied for walls.  The slightly stronger yellow undertone creates a warm and natural white colour for walls, trim ceiling and cabinetry!

Simply White OC-117

Simply White OC-117

As many of you know, OC-117 Simply White is Benjamin Moore’s 2016 Colour of the Year!  This is an exciting year to discover all these shades of white, including the 2016 colour.  Simply White combines the brightness of a colour like Chantilly Lace and the warmth of the Cloud White, into a fresh, yet warm shade of white.  Formerly, Simply White has often been used for trims and millwork, however, the warm yellow undertone of this colour makes it a great choice for an inviting wall colour as well.  The Simply White can pair well with vivid colours because it’s a bright colour itself, as well as warmer tone colours due to the yellow undertone.  For more insight into the uses of Simply White, check out Benjamin Moore Colour Trends 2019

Dove Wing OC-18

Dove Wing OC-18

OC-18 Dove Wing falls under a warm off white, and the darkest out of this selection of whites.  Dove Wing is still an overall light colour and a great white to use on the walls. The gray tones make for a softer shade, while the touch of yellow makes it warm and an inviting hue of white.  Dove Wing is also a great alternative for a cabinetry colour, creating a casual and natural look as apposed to a pure white which can sometimes come off too stark or sanitary.

White Dove OC-17

White Dove OC-17

OC-17 White Dove is OC-18 Dove Wing’s counterpart! White Dove is a slightly lighter version of the creamy and soft off white of Dove Wing.  These two colours pair well with each other, often with White Dove as trim and Dove Wing as a corresponding wall colour.  Unlike the Cloud White, the White Dove has a little less yellow, and more gray creating still a warm but more neutral coloured off white.  White Dove is a completely versatile colour, suitable for trim, kitchen cabinets as well as walls.  White Dove can also be used as both the wall and trim colours at the same time, with preferably different sheen textures, to make a room appear taller.

Decorators White CC-20

Decorators White CC-20

Decorators White falls under a cool undertone of an off-white. It contains a little gray, creating an off-white option that doesn’t lean in any particular colour tone, but it’s a softer version of a pure white such as Chantilly Lace.  This particular shade of white is a good option for trim colours when combined with grays.

Oxford White CC-30

Oxford White CC-30

CC-30 Oxford White is one of my favourite whites! This is an excellent choice for trims and millwork.  It’s similar to Decorators White, due to its gray background.  It makes for a fresh, clean and modern white, but because it doesn’t appear too gray, can also be substituted for a pure white.  It is a softer version of Benjamin Moore’s purest white Chantilly Lace.  Oxford White is what I would consider, a close second to Cloud White in terms of versatility with most colours.  It is warm enough to be suited to warm colours, yet pure enough to compliment cool colours as well.

Intense White OC-51

Intense White OC-51

This shade of white, leans heavily to the gray scale of off-whites.  It also has a slight undertone of green, which allows it to feel warmer without it being a yellow-gray.  This makes for a great choice for a wall colour that has just a hint of depth to it, and feels warmer than a pure gray.  The Intense White is a flexible gray that looks great with many shades of grays.  The muted white can be combined with lighter shades of white trim or even the same shade in a different sheen.

Paper White OC-55

OC-55 Paper White falls in between the warmth of Intense White and the gray from Pure White.  It carries qualities of both colours, a mixture of blue, green and gray to form a creamy version of a cool gray.  The Paper White performs best on walls, creating a fresh, yet diffused white, that pairs well with cool tones of blue, greens and grays.

This shade of off white is the coolest on our spectrum of whites, containing the most blue.  It also has a little gray to create a blend that is crisp, vivid yet soft.  The Pure White, while not necessarily true to its name, is a good choice of colour for walls, that pair well with grays and cool colour tones such as blues.

Colour Trends 2017 & Colour of the Year 2117-30 Shadow

Benjamin Moore’s 2017 colours

2017 COTY Shadow

Colours of 2016

We’re excited to finally delve into Benjamin Moore’s colour trends palette for 2017.  Let’s first take a moment to reflect, one last time on what worked well from the 2016 colours.  The 2016 series was inspiration to the concept of how to use whites, based on the 2016 colour of the year OC-117 Simply White.  The colour was exhibited through different methods of how to use in design, like layering white on whites, adding punches of colour or pairing it down with neutrals .  The remaining 2016 colours included muted primary colours, like the 2022-40 Banana Yellow and 2076-20 Royal Flush, which realistically appeared to be the least popular choices throughout the year, where the off whites and pastel shades excelled.

Colour Trends 2017

As for the New Year, we encounter a distinctive and mysterious hue; 2117-30 Shadow.  What a contrasting difference from the unadorned off white colour previously chosen last year!  Shadow is a significantly darker tone, bathed in a subdued purple hue that projects a noble yet sober atmosphere.

2017 COTY Shadow

2017 COTY Shadow

In comparison the 2017 colours takes a surprisingly darker tone throughout the palette.  The series is infused with deep, moody shades layered into rich and decadent colours, like the 2050-10 Salamander, 2062-20 Gentlemen’s Gray and 2075-10 Dark Burgundy.

2017 Colour Trends

Neutrals are also scattered throughout the collection, in both grays and beige’s, for example the 2112-50 Stormy Monday, AF-680 Wish and 2096-30 Grandfather Clock Brown.

2017 Colour Trends

A notable trend in the 2017 colour collection, is the prevalent pinkish-purple undertones found throughout, which emit a luminescent and warm impression.  Previously, cool whites and grays were prominent colour choices, but the disadvantage is they doesn’t always transfer idyllically to every space.

2017 Colour Trends

The elusive shades of the pink and purple toned hues, inherently complement the colour of the year, and the remaining colours are equally flattering shades of blues, greens or yellowed oranges, also purposefully harmonious.

2017 Colour Trends

Benjamin Moore’s 2017 colour trends takes a sophisticated stance, all the while maintaining a chic disposition.  This year, it’s go dark or go home!  The off whites can become static, whereas the inherently dark and restrained colours is a classic choice that creates naturally temperate ambiance.  From the forgiving qualities of the supple whites, to the confiding, languid hues that seem to dissolve into the walls, and all the shades in between, 2017 is entertained with colour possibilities for all year round’!

Colour Harmony

Benjamin Moore’s Affinity Colours eliminates the struggle of pairing coordinating colours together. Have you ever been in the position, where you’re trying to harmonize paint colours, but one just doesn’t seem to mesh well with the other? One of the hardest parts of choosing colours, seems to be matching colours, whether it be between rooms or multiple colours in one room.

The Affinity Collection is not the newest addition to Benjamin Moore’s Colour Palate by any means, however it tends to be looked over when there are so many other known colour choices offered by Benjamin Moore.  While the Historical Collection and Designer Classics are just some of the tried and true colour selections, the Affinity colours deserve some attention.  The Affinity collection offers a service, if you will, within its selection that is unique to solely Affinity colours.  The Affinity colours are built to work in congruence with one another.

Affinity Fandeck

bedroom

The beauty of the Affinity Colour Collection, is there are 144 individual colours that have been specifically formulated to be paired and used in combination of any three and the palate will work.  By ‘work’ I mean it will harmonize from room to room, or in combination within one room.  How is this possible you ask? Well, there are three factors that comprise of how a colour works well together: HVC Hue, Value & Chroma.

The Science behind the Affinity Colours

We’ve all had that moment when we choose a colour and we’re trying to match, one that ‘goes’ with it, but automatically we know they do not blend.  The complete science behind that can comprise the content of an entirely different subject, but the thick of it – without delving too much into the science — is that the Affinity colours are made up of three components, Hue, Value and Chroma H/V/C.

The hue refers to the colour, the difference between seeing red, blue, green or yellow on your walls.  The value indicates the lightness or darkness of a colour.  For example, the colour blue can be dark blue, like the AF-565 Mysterious

Colour Swatch AF-565 Mysterious

or light blue AF-540 Constellation.

Colour Swatch AF-540 Constellation

While this is of the same hue the value of that one colour is different.  The last quality perceived is the Chroma.  This is a term hardly used in typical colour conversation, however it is certainly one of the most important factors in choosing colours that harmonize well together.  The Chroma represents the dullness of a colour.  It isn’t what many people consider to be how much gray is IN a colour, rather how vibrant or muted a colour appears. For instance, the same colour blue that we mentioned, can appear to be a vibrant, bold blue, or it can be a soft, watery blue.  While all other factors of this blue can be the same, the intensity of a colour can differ from the most vibrant shade of that hue to the dullest shade.

The Affinity Colours share at least one of these attributes to its counterpart colour.  If you were to randomly select any 3 colours, they each share one or more of these qualities, and while I’m not recommending to randomly select 3 colours to employ in your own home, the theory does apply.  In fact, I’ve tested this multiple times, specifically choosing the worst colour combinations I could think of, and while it may not be my first choice of colour pairings, I can agree the colours do flow well from one to another.

How & Where you Can Use Affinity Colours

The Affinity colour selection can be utilized on many scales; it can become the colour palate for one room, for example an accent wall, trim, and main colour.  While this is one version of how the Affinity could be employed, I’d recommend to take advantage of the service, of the perfect parings, provided within the colours and apply it on a larger scale of your home.  For instance, instead of using three colours in one room, use three different colours in three different rooms, to maximize the flow from one room to another.  The hallway, living room and kitchen could be considered three separate rooms, and by applying the Affinity colours to the majority of the main floor, you’ve ensured harmony from front door to back door.  And why stop there? Technically you can take it further, and apply the same rules to the upstairs.  For example the hallway colour typically drifts up the stairs and becomes the upstairs hallway.  Potentially you can choose bedroom colours off the chosen hallway colour as well. While the Affinity has a great cohesive palate, the 144 colours does not compare to the 1000’s of colours from the Colour Preview section.  While the Affinity palate is limited in the variety of colour selection, it’s a great option for a selection of colours that doesn’t feel as overwhelming.   One of the benefits of the Affinity colours is, it has a versatile collection of neutrals.  The selection ranges from pure beiges to pure grays and all types of greiges in between!  One of my favourite grays from the Affinity collection, is AF-690 Metropolitan.

AF-690 Metropolitan

AF-690 Metropolitan

It’s a slightly lighter version of the well known and loved Coventry gray, which could at times, come across too dark.  Comparably, AF-685 Thunder and AF-100 Pashmina

AF-685 Thunder

AF-100 Pashmina

AF-100 Pashmina

appears to be similar versions of the popular HC-172 Revere Pewter;

the Thunder a little bit more gray and the Pashmina leaning towards the beige. Some of the lighter hues include AF-5 Frostine,

Colour Swatch AF-5 Frostine

which could be utilized as a crisp white for trims, and AF-65 Fossil

Colour Swatch AF-65 Fossil

AF-65 Fossil

a soft creamy colour perfect for off white walls.

The Affinity colour chip cards are made slightly larger for easy viewing, and compared to the colour preview chips, they’re presented in single chip colours, versus sharing 3-4 colours on one chip.  Not only does the Affinity collection of colours provide the perfect pairings for three colours, they can also be an excellent choice as a singular colour.  AF-290 Caliente

Colour Swatch AF-290 Caliente

AF-290 Caliente

is one of my favourite reds from the entire Benjamin Moore collection, as is the warm and cozy, milky brown of AF-155 Weimaraner,

both of which would look phenomenal used on its own.

So the next time you find yourself struggling to match colours for your home, or even one room, turn to the Affinity Colour Collection.  These colours have been specifically formulated to harmonize together, no matter what combination of three colours you choose. It’s arguably the easiest way to synchronize colours throughout your home!
